Two ways the same room can go
Paint straight over the film
- Water-based paint reactivates the nicotine, which migrates into the new coat
- Yellow or brown blotches appear as it dries or weeks later
- Odor softens briefly, then returns on warm days
- Paint may peel where it never bonded to the greasy film
Wash, rinse, prime, then paint
- Most of the residue is removed before any coating
- A stain-blocking primer locks what remains below the paint
- Topcoat color stays true
- Odor stays down because the source is gone or sealed
The sequence painters use on smoke-stained rooms
Remove what is coming out
Take out carpet, drapes and furniture first so dust and fibers do not land on wet primer.
Wash with a residue-cutting cleaner
A degreasing cleaner meant for smoke film or a phosphate-free TSP substitute, applied from the ceiling down. Heavy rooms may need two passes.
Rinse thoroughly
Cleaner left on the wall can interfere with primer adhesion. Clear water and frequent water changes matter.
Let it dry completely
Denver's dry air helps, but give closets and north rooms extra time.
Prime everything that was exposed
Ceilings included. Spot priming leaves an unprimed band that can bleed and smell.
Check before topcoating
If tint shows through the primer or the room still smells closed up, add a second primer coat.
Apply finish coats
Ordinary interior paint is fine on top of a proper primer.

Common questions
Can I skip priming if the walls look clean after washing?
In a home with years of indoor smoking, priming is cheap insurance. Residue can remain in the paint layers even after a wall looks clean, and it tends to show up the first summer.
